Darkness isn't merely the sum of an equation expressing the absence of light; darkness is the fully-developed presence of everything absent from light.
Also found abundantly in nearly every culture is the tacit, often clumsily-embraced realization that opposites are, and must be, interdependent, and even interconnected, in the natural universe. Darkness exists because of light, and is present wherever light is not. While this seeming contradiction has been illustrated, with varying degrees of authenticity, in a number of ways—Yin and Yang, hot and cold, pleasure and pain—such lofty precepts are frequently less-than understandable to the mass, common conventionality of any culture.
Thankfully, the analogy of one thing being opposite to another doesn't always manifest in the lofty realm of philosophers. Occasionally, one is discovered which is both adequately, if not simplistically, relatable to the idea being expressed, and easily accessible to even the most pedestrian cultural constituents.
Therefore; to the pantheon of illustrations for the concept of opposites, I offer the following two examples:
One Side: Jive Talkin' - Bee Gees
Other Side: I Wanna Be Sedated - The Ramones
